See you at the International Society for the Study of Individual Differences Conference in Florence!

Our lab will be conducting a symposium on Individual predictors of intergroup hostility: facilitators and inhibitors. In this symposium we will talk about individual dispositions that either contribute to intergroup conflicts (collective narcissism and hedonistic beliefs about revenge) or mitigate intergroup conflicts (gratitude and mindfulness). The symposium will be chaired by Agnieszka Golec de Zavala

Talk 1

Collective narcissism as a coping mechanism for unfulfilled self-entitlement
Dorottya Lantos (Goldsmiths, University of London) & Agnieszka Golec de Zavala (Goldsmiths, University of London; SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Poznan; Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL))

In this talk, Dorottya will discuss collective narcissism, (i.e. the belief that one’s own group is exceptional, entitled to privileged treatment, and is not sufficiently recognized by others), as a compensation for individual insecurity and a low sense of self-worth.

Talk 2

Rewarding power of revenge: Introducing the ‘hedonistic beliefs about revenge’ scale
Karolina Dyduch-Hazar (SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw), Blazej Mrozinski (SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Poznan) & Agnieszka Golec de Zavala (Goldsmiths, University of London; SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Poznan; Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL))

A scale Blazej, Agnieszka and I have been working on for the several months will finally be introduced! Hedonistic Beliefs About Revenge Scale assesses the expectation of emotional reward from harming others, as a response to the perception of being harmed by them. The scale focuses on measuring a specific motivation for retaliatory actions: a potential affect improvement.

Talk 3

Collective narcissism predicts retaliatory intergroup aggression via belief in the hedonistic power of intergroup revenge, especially when past harm to the in-group is made salient
Karolina Dyduch-Hazar (SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw), Blazej Mrozinski (SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Poznan) & Agnieszka Golec de Zavala (Goldsmiths, University of London; SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Poznan; Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL))

In this talk I will present the results of a large study conducted in Poland. We manipulated in-group resentment by reminding participants of the alliance pact the British broke with Poland in 1939. By doing so, Britain left Poland to fight the Nazi occupation on their own. We then examined whether exposure to the manipulation interacted with beliefs about rewarding revenge and, therefore, resulted in higher symbolic aggression against Britain. (Not) surprisingly, collective narcissism and in-group satisfaction, two alternative beliefs about social identity, again resulted in opposite unique predictions for intergroup behaviours.

Talk 4

Gratitude reduces collective narcissism-prejudice link
Magdalena Mazurkiewicz (SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw)  & Agnieszka Golec de Zavala (Goldsmiths, University of London; SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Poznan; Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL))

Magdalena will share the results of three studies investigating whether gratitude (i.e. ability to feel thankful for positive aspects of an experience) curtails prejudice among collective narcissists. Her results suggest that prejudice might be a form of compensation for the inability to regulate negative emotions. Experiencing gratitude may be a way of coping with distress and, therefore, results in prejudice reduction.
